Learning Essay
Design Ethics, Equity and Justice
The first thing I learned about environmental studies was that I knew nothing about it. Throughout this course I learned about the intricacies of natural processes and how they relate to the human experience, especially how it relates to class struggle and suffering. This is evident in my notes for week four, where I talk about learning about weatherization and how different energy systems, such as hybrid or electrified systems, harm or benefit certain communities. (week four, tuesday) This change in scope caused me to become more invested in recognising such relationships and how nature and human society work with or against each other. This new angle helped me foster a new interest and motivation for the subject. In my observations, I try to take this perspective and apply it to mundane activities as noted in my observations, like lawncare and traffic tolls. (observation week 4, week3)
This sense of understanding privilege only furthered as I researched in my topics of interest. While I do not have a car myself, I have easy access to them through friends and partners, and spend a significant time on the road. Seeing cities slowly meld into car-centric environments was originally in the back of my mind, but after gaining a better understanding of the lack of design ethics involved, I became more aware of the continued abuse of the working families that live around me. This realisation was not dissimilar to week nine’s lesson about parallel planes, and how the rich live their lives socially isolated from the rest of the population. I do not mean to equate non-privileged communities as animals, but they are sure treated that way by the privileged. In seeing where roads and highways are built, I see that the privileged disregard underprivileged communities, especially the unhoused, when they build roads convenient to them but absolutely devastating for others.
Creativity
Throughout this class, I grew in my ability to express my creativity. In previous classes, learning was a rigid, binary system that left much to be desired. This class helped change my relationship with learning by giving me the freedom to connect what I am learning to my own life. With my past experience with web development, I am able to convey all of my knowledge in a manner that is unique to me. This is evident with my portfolio website. What makes this class truly stand out is not only allowing me to be creative in how I express myself, but also in what I want to learn. This class, more than anything, teaches me how to learn my own way. This is clear with what I selected for my tiny project. Due to my bands, I am often touring a lot throughout the north east and into Canada. Being able to learn about not only the history of the roads I have spent hours on, but also their intricate relationship with the communities that have been hurt by them. In discussions with my classmates, like on Thursday of week eight, I was able to discuss my project with my fellow classmates and take their interesting ideas and fold it into my own work. My transformation from a binary, traditional student to a more creative and imaginative one is seen with trends within my observation. In the beginning I tended to talk about that immediately around me because I believed that to fulfill the nature of the assignment. As the class goes on, it becomes clear that I moved to focus on what I as a person was paying attention to and what I really cared about.
Building Knowledge
If I was to sum up my learning experience for this class, I would say that this class is learning how people survive both with each other and the environment. I learned about the intricate relationships people had with food, infrastructure and wildlife. One method I developed my knowledge was how I moved from my observations regarding car infrastructure, into a detailed report regarding I-95 and how it affected the local communities. Another method I applied previous learning is during the week 9 class activity regarding parallel worlds. My group was tasked to find out how to make the city of Philadelphia have more hospitality for all animals it calls home. I recalled learning about how robust the water system is in Philadelphia and so we as a team believed that the city has the resources to create water based infrastructure for wildlife, like converting grey stormwater infrastructure into green habitats. This also ties into my tiny project, which is all about how highways separated neighborhoods from the important waterfront area. This knowledge regarding how Philadelphia operates and how it affects people extends far beyond this classroom. I brought this knowledge to my American politics class, where I used this to help contextualize how local government actually works and how we as citizens and exercise our rights to change the issues that affect all of us.

Dear Dr. Kenner,
I believe that I am still a good candidate for a B to A- grade. It is evident that, despite my issues regarding timeliness, I go above and beyond what is required of me. I again went out of my way to provide an engaging and unique format. By recontextualizing the material I learn, I am engaging in Engaged Pedagogy, helping me truly understand and personalize the material. I believe that my work is worthy of either an A or B grade as it matches the rubric. I have completed all assignments, and my work engages with the class ideas in a thoughtful manner. I believe my work does develop and improve as the class goes on, and does exhibit, to a certain extent, progress towards my learning goals. In the design ethics and justice section of my learning essay, I talk about how I have become motivated and interested in my work, enough that my relationship with it has improved.
Since the Midterm meeting, I have implemented all of the previous feedback, such as more focus on learning goals and patching missing research questions. Below is how I developed my research goals.
-
Fostering a positive relationship with my work
- The freedom to be able to present my progress in whatever manner I want, in this case a website, helped me enjoy the process of work.
- One of the biggest examples of this improvement is my tiny project. I have mixed my personal life, other classes and the knowledge I built here in order to produce a paper I am proud of.
- I have struggled with this throughout my whole school life, and did not expect this class to function as behavioural therapy, but I still think it has helped me. Despite me turning this in late, I am still proud of myself. I am proud of myself because despite having to deal with a significantly stressful event in my personal life whilst in the middle of my finals, I managed to produce work that I am proud of in all of my classes, and that is thanks to my steady improvement.
I believe that my work is worthy of either an A or B grade as it matches the rubric. I have completed all assignments, and my work engages with the class ideas in I believe a thoughtful manner. I believe my work does develop and improve as the class goes on, and does exhibit, to a certain extent, progress towards my learning goals. In the design ethics and justice section of my learning essay, I talk about how I have become motivated and interested in my work, enough that my relationship with it has improved. In the creativity section, I talk about how applying my other skills into this class, such as web development, not only helps me improve my creativity with my work, btu also re-learn it in a new context so that I can internalize and learn it thoroughly. While I do still struggle with time management, I have been able to slowly improve. While I do participate in group discussions and other tasks within the classroom, there is some room for improving my confidence and frequency of participation. You can find all the required material for this assignment on the website. Thank you for reviewing my work and self-assessment.

Learning Essay
Design Ethics, Equity and Justice
When I first took this class, I believed this class to be about the natural processes of the world. I learned very early on that this was nowhere near the full scope of what Environmental Science entailed. Not only did I learn about viewing the world in a different light, I also learned about how to help out my local community. In week three on Thursday, I learned about and discussed with the class how to inform the community about the available resources that may help out the people in philly living under the poverty line. Such examples would be learning and spreading the knowledge about Philadelphia's water program and the cost and risk of alternate energy sources. This topic helped me understand my privilege and position, as I never had to worry about finding outside support for energy bills. This new angle helped me foster a new interest and motivation for the subject. In my observations, I try to take this perspective and apply it to mundane activities as noted in my observations, like lawncare and traffic tolls. (observation week 4, week3)
Skills and Strategies
I tend to struggle in a traditional class environment. My mind tends to race and struggle for concentration and attention. This class helped me not only give them the tools to slow down but also change the way I learn so that I learn in a way that suits me. With each meditation, I have been able to slowly improve my headspace as class starts. Over the course of my notes, it is evident that they have been more and more effective as time went along. Working on this midterm through a website has helped me retain what I learned better as I can relate to the material more. This is in part due to what I learned in week one with Engaged pedagogy. I applied engaged pedagogy for this class by personalizing what we were learning in order to transform blank works on a paper to a real personal memory. This is evident in my observations and group discussions, where I talk about concepts we learned like weatherization and how it applies to me. This class also forces me to address my time management issues head on, by giving me full responsibility in terms of deadlines. While normal classes have assignments due weekly, Environmental Science focuses work on portfolios. While this class does have weekly assignments, it is evident that the weight of this class is not with them. This removes weekly pressure, which means it is up to me to delegate time to work on this class in a timely manner. This skill is not specific to Environmental Science, as it can be applied in all work. While I still have a long way to go, I have been given the tools to address my time related issues.
Confidence
I have hallways been a shy speaker, with very little confidence in my work. As stated in my learning goal, I do not have a lot of confidence in my work. Oftentimes when I have made a mistake, I lose all confidence and become demoralized, which harms my future assignments. This class has been helping me tackle this by how the group discussions are structured. By constantly rotating out group members, I can see students from all levels of confidence and competence. This has helped me realize that my work, even when subpar, is not to be sulked over. I experienced this when working on the group story. Usually group work makes me envious of others and their knowledge, but a lot of the group discussions or work are not about that. They are co-operative in a way that makes me confident in my abilities. This can also be seen when we discuss as a class regarding research memos. One example of this is week two's gift economy group discussion. By having a group leader repeat my ideas, I could both see how my words impacted the discussion but also retain a certain level of anonymity that let me share such ideas to begin with. This group dynamic also helps me learn from my peers and become more interdependent and less of a hermit. It is due to the group discussions that I was able to better understand the class material, especially when it came to understanding Philadelphia and its intersectionality with environmental science. This is seen with me learning about all the programs that the city uses and the struggle of its people.

Dear Dr. Kenner,
I believe that I am a good candidate for a B to A- grade. I believe that this is an accurate assessment of my grade because I not only did what was required, but I have put in significant amount of time and effort towards my work. This is evident in my midterm portfolio, where I went out of my way to provide an engaging and unique format that fit not only to the classwork and the specifications, but also to the skills that make me unique. In this way, I am engaging in Engaged Pedagogy so that I am not only learning, but also truly understanding and personalizing the material.
I initially took this course because I thought the content would be interesting. At the time, I believed the content to just be about the natural environment and its processes. When I learned that there was much more, I changed my perspective with the class and nevertheless engaged with it I understand that I was absent for Tuesday of week three, I made up my work by completing the learning memo outside of class.
I believe that my work is worthy of either an A or B grade as it matches the rubric. I have completed all assignments, and my work engages with the class ideas in I believe a thoughtful manner.
